Mark Wilkinson is dedicated to the care of patients who suffer from joint problems. He is the orthopaedic surgeon specialist representative for the UK NICE Osteoarthritis guideline committee that advises patients what treatments for osteoarthritis should be offered by doctors in the UK. He is a member of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International Guideline Committee that gives global guidance on the best treatments for arthritis. Prof Wilkinson also gives regular talks to patient, physio and GP groups on hip and knee pain and its treatment.

The International Hip Society is the society of 100 leading hip surgeons in the world. Professor Wilkinson is one of less than 20 UK hip surgeon members of this society andbone of only 3 clinically active members in the North of England and Scotland. Prof Wilkinson developed the patient decision tool for joint replacement that allows patients to understand the benefits and risks of joint replacement and help them to make an informed decision about these treatments. This interactive tool was developed in Sheffield with the help of patients and is freely available on the internet at Patient Decision Support Tool for Joint Replacement (shef.ac.uk) and has now been used over 100,000 times in over 110 countries.

Prof Wilkinson qualified and trained in Sheffield. He undertook a PhD in the science of hip replacement at the University of Sheffield, which he completed in 2001. He received his specialist training in the treatment of hip and knee problems in Sheffield and at the Wrightington Hospital (where modern hip replacement surgery was first developed). He also underwent specialist fellowship training in hip and knee replacement surgery in Canada, Switzerland, and Japan. Prof Wilkinson has received over £15 million in collaborative scientific grant funding and published 8 book chapters and over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications on arthritis and its treatment, including in the world’s leading science journal “Nature”. Professor Wilkinson has given invited lectures all over the world on the topics of joint replacement and arthritis. He and his students have received many international awards, including the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize, Fellowship of the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies and the Orthopaedic Research Society, The American Hip Society Otto Aufranc Award, The American Orthopaedic Research Society William Harris Award (twice), The British Hip Society McKee Prize (twice), National Osteoporosis Society and American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
